The Best Time for Gutter Cleaning in Burlington and the GTA
Gutter cleaning is the most under-loved maintenance job on most Burlington and GTA homes. It's invisible from the curb, it's not glamorous, and skipping it shows up two seasons later as a $3,000 fascia repair or a wet basement. The good news: timing it well takes most of the pain out.
Two windows that matter most
Late fall — after the last leaves drop
In Burlington, oak and maple drop is heaviest from mid-October through early November, with stragglers into the third week of November. The right time to clean gutters is after the trees are bare — usually the last week of November or first week of December. Clean too early and you're back up there in three weeks.
Why it matters: leaves left in the gutter freeze into a solid mass, ice backs up under the shingles (ice damming), water finds its way into the soffit, and you start seeing stains on the ceiling above your exterior walls by February.
Early spring — before the first heavy rain
Mid-March to early April is the second window. Winter dumps grit, shingle granules and any leaves that blew in late into the troughs. Cleaning before the spring downpours means downspouts actually move water away from the foundation when you need them to. This is also when we inspect downspout extensions and re-seat any that frost-heaved over the winter.
Signs you need an extra cleaning between
- Water sheeting over the front of the gutter during a storm — the trough is full or the downspout is blocked.
- Plants growing out of the gutter — yes, this happens, especially on north-facing sides.
- Stains running down the fascia or siding under the gutter line.
- A wet patch on the foundation near a downspout outlet.
Why Burlington and the lake-shore towns need extra attention
Burlington, Oakville and Hamilton all sit close enough to Lake Ontario that we get longer fall freeze-thaw cycles than inland towns. Water that would simply freeze solid in Aurora or Stouffville cycles through freeze and thaw on lakeshore homes — and that's exactly the cycle that pries soffits loose and pushes water under shingles.
DIY vs. hire it out
If your home is a single storey with safe ladder access, gutter cleaning is a reasonable DIY job twice a year — assuming you have a stable ladder and a spotter. Two-storey homes, anything with a steep roof, or anyone over 60 should hire it out. The fall in question is never the one you're worried about.
We clean gutters across Burlington, Hamilton, Oakville and the rest of the GTA, bag and haul away the debris, flush the downspouts and send you photos of any soft fascia or loose hangers we spot — before they turn into a repair bill.
